The fourth day of the study trip started off with a nice sleep in, breakfast started at 8.45. Unfortunately, the extra sleep was not enough for Martijn, who by accident added salt to his morning coffee instead of sugar.
At 9.45 we left the hostel, nicely dressed in our studytrip sweater to go the Renaissance Construction. It was a one-hour travel to get there by public transport.
When we got there, we were welcomed by Elena and Anastasiia who were waiting for us outside the office. We were guided to a conference room, where we were able to grab some water and coffee. We got several presentations from different engineers; they all were able to tell something about their own expertise.
They mainly told about the Lakhta Center (the highest building of Europe), where they did the realisation of the tower and the engineering as well as the realisation of the wings besides the towers.
Then a structural engineer told about the structural design and integration of HVAC of Lakhta Center. The available ceiling height was very limited, making this a very challenging project. They had to make the ducts cut through the steal beams. Very useful during this difficult project was Navisworks, which was used as a clash control program. In total several different models were used for the wings of the Lakhta Center. They also elaborated upon other software that they commonly used.
They also told about the construction of a storage building of liquid gas in the Yamal area (at the North of Russia where extreme lows of -50°C are reached). This project was built in Murmansk (city in Russia next to Finland), from where the huge construction parts were shipped to the Yamal area.
Then for the technological highlight of the day, a VR experience in the equipment room of the Lakhta Center wings. Some of the students were able to walk through these crowed spaces using the VR glassed.
We finished off the visit with a very big and luxurious lunch in the company restaurant. This was good preparation for the next stop, the Vodka Museum.
It was about one-hour travel to the Vodka Museum. We got a tour where some fun facts were told about the history of Russian Vodka. The exhibition was varied, going from knick knacks to historical political statements and the ancestors of corks and glasses. The practical part was next; three types of vodka were waiting for us: plain, grass and a gin like vodka. These shots were accompanied by three different Russian snacks: anchovy with union on bread, the fat of bacon on bread and a salted pickle.
The dinner was luxurious and a defined taste for student standards. However not all food was ready on time, so some had to wait for their meal. Youri also got his desert before his main dish, which was an unwanted unique experience.
We finished off the day in a café crowned as ‘de Stamkroeg’. Everybody played some card games and drank some beers. We quit right before Bram was a full donkey, so he dodged the bullet (vodka shot) there.

De vierde dag van de studiereis begon op een mooi tijdstip, het ontbijt was om 8.45 uur. Helaas was de extra slaap niet voldoende voor Martijn, die per ongeluk zout in zijn koffie deed in plaats van suiker.
Om 9.45 uur begonnen we onze reis, netjes gekleed in onze studiereistrui naar het bedrijf Renaissance Construction. Het kostte ongeveer een uur om daar te komen met de metro.
Toen we daar aankwamen werden we verwelkomd door Elena en Anastasiia, die buiten het kantoor op verwelkomde. We werden naar een conferentieruimte geleid, waar we wat water en koffie konden pakken. We kregen verschillende presentaties van verschillende ingenieurs; vertelde allemaal wat over hun eigen expertisegebied.
Ze vertelden vooral over het Lakhta Center, waar ze naast de uitvoering van de toren ook voor de vleugels van het centrum de engineering en de uitvoering deden.
Toen vertelde een constructeur over het constructie-ontwerp en de integratie van HVAC in de vleugels van het Lakhta Center. De beschikbare plafondhoogte was zeer beperkt, waardoor dit een zeer uitdagend project was. Ze moesten kanalen door de stalen balken laten voeren. Erg handig tijdens dit ingewikkelde project was Navisworks, dat werd gebruikt als een clash-controleprogramma. In totaal werden 7 verschillende modellen gemaakt voor de vleugels van het Lakhta Center. Ze hebben ook andere programma’s toegelicht die ze vaak gebruiken.
Ze vertelden ook over de bouw van een vloeibaar gasopslag gebouw in het Yamal-gebied (in het noorden van Rusland, waar extreme temperaturen van minimaal -50 °C worden bereikt). Dit project werd gebouwd in Moermansk (stad in Rusland, naast Finland), vanwaar de enorme bouwdelen per boot naar het Yamal-gebied werden verscheept.
Dan voor het technologische hoogtepunt van de dag, de VR-ervaring in de installatieruimte van de vleugels van het Lakhta Center. Sommige studenten konden met behulp van de VR-bril door de ruimtes lopen.
Het bezoek werd afgesloten met een zeer grote en luxe lunch in het bedrijfsrestaurant. Hier werd een goede bodem gelegd voor de volgende halte, het Vodka Museum.
Het was ongeveer een uur reizen naar het Vodka Museum. We kregen een rondleiding waarbij een aantal leuke feiten werden verteld over de geschiedenis van Russische wodka. De tentoonstelling was gevarieerd, bestaande uit prullaria tot historische politieke uitspraken en de voorouders van kurken. Onze kennis werd in praktijk gebracht door het proeven van drie soorten wodka: gewoon, bizongras- en een gin achtige wodka. Deze shots werden vergezeld door drie verschillende Russische snacks: ansjovis met ui op brood, het vet van spek op brood en een gezouten augurk.
Het diner was luxe en een smaaksensatie voor studentenstandaard. Maar niet alle gerechten waren op tijd klaar, dus sommige moesten wachten op hun maaltijd. Youri kreeg ook zijn nagerecht vóór zijn hoofdgerecht, dit was een ongewenste eerste keer.
We sloten de dag af op de Stamkroeg, waar we allemaal wat kaartspelletjes speelden en wat biertjes nuttigden. We stopten vlak voor Bram een Ezel was, waarmee hij ter nauwe nood ontsnapte aan een shotje wodka.
